Match 54 – Chennai Super Kings Kick Out Kings XI Punjab From IPL-2

Date – May 20, 2009
Result – Chennai Super Kings won by 24 runs

Chennai Super Kings Innings
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bat first. They got to a good start but soon Kings bowler strike back with quick wickets. From 40/0 they slipped to 96/6. Earlier it looked Chennai Super Kings would set a good total but some good bowling by Kings Punjab restricted them to 116/9. Patel was the highest scorer for Chennai Super Kings with 32 runs. No other batsmen could capitalize on the start and the second best score in innings was 20 runs by Raina.

Kings XI Punjab Innings
Chasing a very moderate total of 117 to win and get a place in semifinal’s, Kings XI Punjab got to a dream breaking start as they lost 1st wicket in the 2nd over of the innings. Pomersbach and Katich raised some hopes but those were also shattered soon as wickets started felling like a heap of cards. From 32/2 Kings XI Punjab were reduced to 67/7 with 48 runs more needed of just 3 overs. It looked an impossible task and Kings XI Punjab succumbed to the increasing run rate pressure and thus loosing the match by 24 runs. Also with this loss, Kings XI Punjab are now out of IPL-2

Match 53 – Kolkata Knight Riders Pack Rajasthan Royals Bags

Date – May 20, 2009
Result – Kolkata Knight Riders won by 4 wickets

In one of the biggest upsets in IPL season 2, Shahrukh Khan’s Knight Riders defeated Shipla Shetty’s Rajasthan Royals and thus eliminated the defending champions from the race. Today’s match though was a low scoring one but it hooked the viewers on the chairs as till the last over, it looked that it could be anyone’s game. Earlier Kolkata won the toss and elected to field first. With excellent bowling and fielding they got wickets at regular intervals. Royals never gained the momentum and in the end of 20 overs they could manage only 101 runs with Ojha’s 22 being the highest.

Kolkata Knight Riders had to chase just 102 for victory and it looked a very easy task. But at one stage it looked that Royals would get back and Kolkata Knight Riders might even lose this match. Kolkata Knight Riders were reeling at 45/6. But then came the savior for them. Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Ajit Agarkar’s duo played sensible cricket and with one’s and two’s took the team towards the door step of victory. In the last overs’ some poor fielding by Rajasthan Royals handed the Kolkata Knight Riders a well deserved victory.

Match 52 – Bangalore Royal Challengers Beat Delhi Daredevils By 7 Wickets

Result – Bangalore Royal Challengers won by 7 wickets


Delhi Daredevils Innings

Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to bat first. Delhi Daredevils would have never thought of such a disastrous start as they lost 2 wickets in the very first over. This brought them on backfoot and the normal aggression was lacking in the batting of other batsmen. AB de Villers and Karthik tried to bring the innings back to normal and helped Delhi Daredevils to score a respectable total. Nagar and Mahroof also contributed to the total of 134/7 in 20 overs.

Chasing the moderate target of 135, Bangalore Royal Challengers lost the first wicket in first over of the innings and it looked Bangalore Royal Challengers will be in some sort of problem chasing this small total too. But then Bangalore Royal Challengers batsmen Kallis and Dravid bounced back and took the team to 54/1 in 10 overs. Dravid was the one to got out after scoring 38 runs but his innings got Bangalore Royal Challengers out of trouble. Taylor came to the center after Dravid’s wicket and he just smashed the bowl for 3 sixes. His camero of 23 in just 12 balls made the target well in reach. Kallis along with Boucher took Bangalore Royal Challengers to a convincing victory by 7 wickets. Kallis remained unbeaten on 58 runs off 56 balls.

Match 51 – Kolkata Knight Riders Beat Chennai Super Kings By 7 wickets

Result – Kolkata Knight Riders won by 7 wickets

Chennai Super Kings Innings
Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bat first. They got to an excellent start and Knight Riders bowlers were smashed to all corners. The excellent start was thrown away as Chennai Super Kings lost both openers due to run outs. But this did not deter them from playing aggressive strokes. Raina and Dhoni then took the charge and played exceedingly well to help team get past the 150 run mark. Every batsmen of Chennai Super Kings contributed and thus in the end they were able to post a huge total of 188/3 in 20 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders playing just to save some prestige got a herculean task to chase 189 in 20 overs lost Ganguly for just 4 runs. But on the other hand McCullum was in a punishing mood and he along with Hodge got the score past 100 in 12th over. McCullum scored 81 off just 48 balls and put Kolkata Knight Riders in the drivers seat. Kolkata Knight Riders required 25 runs off the last 2 overs with 7 wickets in hand. Hodge played really well and hit 2 sixes. In the last over Kolkata Knight Riders needed just 6 runs and it proved to be a cakewalk
At last they were able to win a match in this IPL – 2 by 7 wickets

Match 50 – Delhi Daredevils Won By 14 Runs Against Rajasthan Royals

Date – May 17, 2009
Result – Delhi Daredevils won by 14 runs

Delhi Daredevils Innings
Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision looked a bit hasty as they lost 2 quick wickets of Gambhir and Sehwag for just 15 runs. But then AB De Villers came to bat and changed the total scenario and took Delhi Daredevils out of the trouble. He played some very good shots and along with Dilshan took the score past 100. After Dilshan got out, Karthik came and played a cameo of 23 runs and thus helped Delhi Daredevils post a total of 150/3 in 20 overs.

Rajasthan Royals Innings
Chasing 151 to win, Rajasthan Royals lost 3 quick wickets and were struggling at 24/3 in the 7th over. But Botha and Jadega came to Rajasthan Royals rescue and played cautiously and took the score past 50. Rajasthan Royals were 60/3 in 10 overs and required 91 more to win in remaining 10 overs. In the process of increasing run rate, Jadega got out and Yusuf Pathan came to the center. As soon as Jadega fell, wickets started to fell in quick succession and Rajasthan Royals were reduced to 107/9.
The ended with 136/9 thus handing Delhi a win by 14 runs.
