A Superb batting performance by KKR top order helped them beat RCB by 47 runs despite Chris Gayle blasting innings of 86

Today in the 38th match of DLF IPL 2012, Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bat first. Kolkata Knight Riders openers, B McCullum and G Gambhir gave them flying start as the duo added 95 runs in 10.3 overs for the first wicket stand. B McCullum was bowled by Vettori after scoring 43 off 37 balls but this wicket didn’t resolved RCB problems as Gambhir and Kallis then hammered every bowler out of the park. Gambhir was at his devastating best as he scored 93 off 51 balls which included 9 fours and 5 sixes. Kallis also played a cameo of 41 off just 27 balls which included 1 four and 3 sixes. It was the superb batting performance by KKR which helped them post a total of 190/4 in 20 overs.

Chasing 191 to win, RCB got the first shock when T Dilshan was dismissed in the very first over when the team score was just 2. Gayle and Kohli then took the score to 34 when KKR got a double breakthrough as both V Kohli and the man in form for RCB AB de Villiers got out on successive bowls of Kallis over. Royal Challengers Bangalore were struggling at 34/3 in 5.3 overs but still had hope as Gayle was still present on crease. RCB needed 135 off last 10 overs and it looked really difficult as the run rate was increasing with each dot ball. S Tiwary was the next wicket to fell as he got out after scoring 19 runs. M Agarwal and Gayle then took the team score past 100 but good bowling by KKR never allowed them to free their arms. Chris Gayle’s brilliant 86 off 58 balls went in vain as RCB could manage just 143/6 in 20 overs and thus lost the match by 47 runs.

At the end of 12 overs, KXIP were placed at 97/2 and it looked they will post a big total, but superb come back by CSK bowlers brought CSK back in game. In the 16th over, D Miller got out when the team score was 127. Chasing 157 to win, Chennai got off to a good start with Faf du Plessis and S Badrinath adding 47 runs in just 5.3 overs. Faf du Plessis was the first to fall after scoring 29 runs off 20 balls. In the 8th over, Mahmood striked again and got the wicket of S Badrinath. Suresh Raina once again failed and CSK were struggling at 71/3 in 10.2 overs. Kings XI Bowlers were well complemented by the fielders and run scoring was made really difficult for CSK. The pressure of increasing run rate was getting on to the nerves of CSK batsmen and a twin blow in the form of W Saha and MS Dhoni left them struggling at 88/5 in 13.2 overs. CSK were depending on Jadeja but the most expensive played failed to deliver and was out after scoring just 17 runs. CSK were struggling at 98/6 in 15 overs and needed 59 to win from last 5 overs. D Bravo played some good shots for his 21 ball 30runs and the match was all set for a last over finish. Finally it was KXIP which hold on to their nerves and won the match by 7 runs.
