Match 19 – Kolkata Knight Riders vs Bangalore Royal Challengers

Date – Apr 29, 2009
Result – Bangalore Royal Challengers win by 5 wickets

Kolkata Knight Riders Innings
Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bat first.They could not have got more disastrous start as they lost McCullum for a golden duck. Hodge and Gayle then took the score to 45 when Hodge became the victim of Kumble. Even Gayle could not play as freely as he always does but still managed 40 runs in 37 balls. Ganguly failed once and scored just 1 run, leaving his fans disappointed. M van Wyk and Saha then played and duo helped Kolkata Knight Riders cross the 100 run mark. In the end it was a total well shot of what was expected and Kolkata Knight Riders managed 139/6 in 20 overs.

Bangalore Royal Challengers Innings
Bangalore Royal Challengers got off to a very good start and scored 50 runs without the loss of any wicket. Chasing a modest target of 140, they looked pretty comfortable right from the first over.Goswami was the first to get out when the team score was 69, soon Kallis also got out and Bangalore Royal Challengers were 77/2 in 12.4 overs. Kohli and Pieterson then got some starts but were sent back by Hodge in the same over. Bangalore Royal Challengers required 33 more runs with 6 wickets in hand in remaining 4 overs. Merve got out after scoring just 9 runs. The match became quite interesting as Bangalore Royal Challengers needed 10 runs in the last over. Boucher as many times before was the savior for Bangalore Royal Challengers and scored the required runs to win the match.

Match 18 – Delhi Daredevils vs Rajasthan Royals

Date – Apr 28, 2009
Result – Rajasthan Royals won by 5 wkts

Delhi Daredevils Innings
Delhi Daredevils won the toss and elected to bat first but unlike earlier played matches, this time they could not get off to a flyer. Though the run rate was in excess of 6 but Delhi Daredevils lost wickets at regular interval and it never looked they were in complete charge of the game. A B de Villers was the only hope for Delhi Daredevils and he scored a 50 of just 40 balls to take the score to a respectable total.Vettori and Manhas also chipped in with useful contributions and in the end Delhi Daredevils were able to score a total of 143/7 in 20 overs.

Rajasthan Royals Innings

Chasing the target, Rajasthan Royals got to a very bad start and lost 3 quick wickets when the team score was just 34.Then Jadega and Smith got together and scored some runs for Rajasthan Royals. Just when things started to look good for Rajasthan Royals, Mishra struck twice in the same over and thus Rajasthan Royals were reduced to 64/5 in 11 overs. At this stage it looked like its all over for Rajasthan Royals but Yusuf Pathan came and played an innings of lifetime. He along with Smith washed all the hopes of Delhi Daredevils. Yusuf Pathan scored 61 runs of just 30 balls ( 3 fours and 6 sixes) and helped Rajasthan Royals snatch a victory from mouth of Delhi Daredevils.

Match 17 – Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians

Date – Apr 27, 2009
Result – Mumbai win by 92 runs

Mumbai Indians Innings
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision proved fruitful as both openers, Jayasurya and Sachin Tendulkar gave them the flying start. Both scored at will and punished even good balls to boundary and raised half centuries. Mumbai Indians lost the first wicket in form of Tendulkar when the team score was 127. Soon Harbhajan Singh who played some lusty shots was also sent back to pavilion. After this they lost some quick wickets but the middle order chipped in with some small but useful contributions to score a total of 187/6 in alloted 20 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders Innings
Chasing a high total of 188, Kolkata Knight Riders never got the start they wished. They lost wickets at regular interval and none of the top order batsmen except Ganguly could score runs. Some resistance to Mumbai Indian bowlers was shown by both Dada (Ganguly) and Hodge but once they both were out, the middle and lower order fell like pile of cards.From 71/3 they were all out for 95. Thus Mumbai win by 92 runs and Knight Riders lost yet another match.

Match 16 – Deccan Chargers vs Chennai Super Kings

Date – Apr 27, 2009
Result – Deccan Chargers Win by 6 Wickets

Chennai Super Kings Innings
Deccan Chargers won the toss and elected to field first on this new pitch with a hope of taking some initial wickets. Though they claimed Parthiv Patel in very first order but the hope were ruined by some sensational batting by Mathew Hayden and Suresh Raina. Together they took the score past 50 and it looked they were upto a very high score. But then Raina got out and this brought Dhoni to the crease. With high score in mind, both Dhoni and Hayden started hitting the loose balls to fence and scoring ones and two’s at ease. Ojha was brought to the attack and he got rid of both Dhoni and Hayden in same over to shatter the hopes of Chennai Super Kings. But Jacob Oram played some huge shots and took the score pass 150 and in the end of alloted 20 overs, they scored 165/6.

Deccan Chargers Innings
When Gilchrist and Gibbs are the openers of any team, you can expect fireworks from the very first ball and this is what actually happened today in the 16th match of IPL. Chasing a target of 166, they both smashed the balls to every corner of the ground and the Chennai Super Kings bowler were looking helpless. After all the main bowlers failed, it was Raina who took the priced scalp of Gilly when the team score was 67 in the 6th over. But the damage was already done.Though Raina got another wicket of Laxman soon but still the chase was on and the total looked to low with each shot played by Gibbs. Rohit Sharma and Smith contributed some useful runs but in the end it was Gibbs show and he took his team to victory in the last over.

Match 15 – Kings XI Punjab vs Rajasthan Royals

Date – Apr 26, 2009
Result – Kings XI Punjab won by 27 runs

Kings XI Punjab Innings
Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first. But the decision proved to be disastrous as they lost four wickets for just 48 runs on board. Then it was K Sangakarra and Irfan Pathan who played sensible knocks and took the score pass 100.In the 18th over, Pathan fell to Khan and Kings XI Punjab were tottering at 123/5. Soon Sangakkara also lost his wicket and it was almost all over for Kings XI Punjab. At the end of 20 overs, Kings XI Punjab scored only 139/6 and now its upto the bowling department to save this match for them.

Rajasthan Royals Innings
A dismal batting performance by Rajasthan Royals or you can say a splendid bowling performance by Punjab helped them to win the match which was earlier considered to be a cake walk for Rajasthan Royals. The openers were back in pavilion with the team score of 9/2. The fall of wickets continued and Rajasthan Royals were 42/6 in the ninth over. Jadega and Warne tried to save the match but there heroics were not sufficient and they ended with 112/7 in alloted 20 overs.
