Mumbai Indians Innings
After winning the toss, Mumbai Indians decided to bat first and with the opening pair of Sachin and Jayasurya hard hitting was always anticipated. But Tendulkar was out early and soon after Mumbai Indians lost Rahane. Duminy came into the center to join Jayasurya but this time Duminy too failed and Mumbai Indians were 23/3 in 5.2 overs. Bravo and Jayasurya then batted sensibly and took the score past 80 run mark. Both the batsmen completed half centuries and Bravo remained unbeaten till end. In 20 overs, Mumbai Indians could manage 149/4.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Innings
Chasing the target of 150, they got to a very good start. Though Royal Challengers Bangalore lost Jaffer when the team score was 24, but after then it was no looking back. Kallis and Uthapa punished every bowler and smashed bowlers to every corner of the ground. Both completed half centuries and made sure Royal Challengers Bangalore achieve the target comfortably. Royal Challengers Bangalore required 23 runs with 9 wickets in last 4 overs and it looked like a cakewalk. Uthapa and Kallis made sure that Royal Challengers Bangalore Win By 9 Wickets.

Match 23 – Mumbai Indians Defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 9 Runs

Date – May 1, 2009
Result – Mumbai Indians won by 9 runs

Mumbai Indians Innings
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first. Jayasurya and Sachin started the innings and all the fans expected fireworks all over. But Dinda striked got rid of Jayasurya and Mumbai Indians lost the crucial wicket in the 4th over leaving them 19/1. Harbhajan Singh was sent to do some hitting but he failed and soon Sachin Tendulkar also got out after scoring 34 runs. Mumbai Indians kept loosing wickets at regular interval and this jolted the run rate. But then again Duminy was the player for Mumbai Indians who scored 52 runs in 37 balls and remained unbeaten till end. A small but useful contributions from lower middle order helped Mumbai Indians post 148/6 in alloted 20 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders Innings
Kolkata Knight Riders got off to a disastrous start as Zaheer Khan got rid of Ganguly and Gayle when the team score was just 8. But then B Hodge and M van Wyk got together and played some good shots. While they were batting, it looked that Kolkata Knight Riders might have a chance but just at that moment, Napier got rid of M van Wyk. The run rate was rising and its pressure was too high for Kolkata Knight Riders to manage and thus they eventually lost the match by 9 runs.

Match 20 – Mumbai Indians vs Kings XI Punjab

Date – Apr 29, 2009
Result – Punjab win by 3 runs

Kings XI Punjab Innings
Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first but the decision was not in favor as the pitch was not conducive for stroke play. Kings XI Punjab lost quick wickets and never recovered from the jolts. Only one batsmen, Kumara Sangakkarra showed some resistance and scored unbeaten 45. The second highest scorer was Goel who scored 12 runs. All other batsmen failed to use the opportunity and score some runs. In the end, after 20 overs, Kings XI Punjab managed just 119/8.
Now it lies on the bowlers to defend this low but competitive total as the pitch seems to have something for the bowlers.

Mumbai Indians Innings
Chasing a total of 120, Mumbai Indians got to a disastrous start as both openers – Jayasurya and Tendulkar were sent back to pavilion when the team score was just 4. Mumbai Indians were reeling at 12/3 in 4.1 overs. Then Bravo and Duminy started to settle the innings and before they could even normalise Mumbai Indians, Bravo was out leaving Mumbai Indians 45/4 in the 10th over. Duminy was the only hope left for Mumbai Indians and he did not disappoint. He played a superb knock of 59 runs and took Mumbai Indians very close to victory. In last over Mumbai Indians required 12 to win and they lost Duminy. This was the turning point and they lost the match by just 3 runs. This was one of the closest match in IPL in which the pendulum shifted from one to another right across the game.

Match 17 – Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians

Date – Apr 27, 2009
Result – Mumbai win by 92 runs

Mumbai Indians Innings
Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision proved fruitful as both openers, Jayasurya and Sachin Tendulkar gave them the flying start. Both scored at will and punished even good balls to boundary and raised half centuries. Mumbai Indians lost the first wicket in form of Tendulkar when the team score was 127. Soon Harbhajan Singh who played some lusty shots was also sent back to pavilion. After this they lost some quick wickets but the middle order chipped in with some small but useful contributions to score a total of 187/6 in alloted 20 overs.

Kolkata Knight Riders Innings
Chasing a high total of 188, Kolkata Knight Riders never got the start they wished. They lost wickets at regular interval and none of the top order batsmen except Ganguly could score runs. Some resistance to Mumbai Indian bowlers was shown by both Dada (Ganguly) and Hodge but once they both were out, the middle and lower order fell like pile of cards.From 71/3 they were all out for 95. Thus Mumbai win by 92 runs and Knight Riders lost yet another match.

Match – 12th – Deccan Chargers Beat Mumbai Indians By 12 Runs

Date – 25 April 2009

Pragyan Ojha (4-0-21-3) balled the spell which enabled Deccan Chargers to beat Mumbai Indians by 12 runs in an IPL match at Durban on Saturday. Not only he took three wickets, he took the price scalps of Sachin Tendulkar and JP Duminy to break the back bone of Mumbai Indians.

Chasing 169 to win, Mumbai finished at 156/7 and with this win Deccan Chargers retained the top spot.After winning the toss Deccan Chargers decided to bat first and thanks to impressive batting by Gilchirst, Gibbs and Smith they scored 168 runs. Once the opener were back, the middle order collapsed and they were restricted to a target much less than what was earlier anticipated. But when Mumbai Indians started the batting, they lost the priced wicket of Jayasurya in 2nd over. Tendulkar and Duminy reconstructed the innings but Ojha with his dream spell ended the hopes for Mumbai Indians.
