Today in the first match of IPL season 8, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Mumbai Indians.

Kolkata who are playing at their home ground would be looking to start the campaign with a decisive win where as 2013 champions Mumbai Indians would go all guns blazing to prove themselves today. The strength of both teams is their batting. With Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Shakib-al-Hasan, Yusuf Pathan, KKR is capable of tearing any bowling apart.

On the other hand Mumbai Indians also have some of the most dangerous T20 players. Rohit Sharma, Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard can change the fortune of the game all by themselves. Rohit Sharma lead Mumbai Indians would be hoping to continue their good run against KKR as they have won 10 out of their 14 matches against KKR.

IPL 2014 Eliminator- Chennai Super Kings Show Door To Mumbai Indians

Toss – Chennai Super Kings elected to field
Result – Chennai Super Kings won by 7 wickets
Man of the match – Suresh Raina

Chennai Super Kings continued their superb performance in crucial matches and defeated Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets to qualify for the second qualifier which will be played against Kings XI Punjab. The winner of that match will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the final to be played on June 1.

Chasing 174 to win, Chennai Super Kings got off to a flying start as openers Dwayne Smith and Faf du Plessis added 60 runs for the first wicket stand. A twin blow by Harbhajan Singh in the 7th over raised some hopes for Mumbai but Suresh Raina once again came to the team’s rescue. Brendon McCullum fell cheaply and CSK were placed at 87/3 in 9.5 overs. Suresh Raina and David Hussey then made sure that CSK continue the run chase without any more hiccups. The duo played excellent cricket shots to make sure Chennai qualifies for the next match. Suresh Raina remained unbeaten on 54 off 33 balls where as David Hussey remained unbeaten on 40 in 29 balls as they chased down 173 with 8 balls to spare.

Earlier Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to field first. Mumbai Indians got off to a superb start as openers Lendl Simmons and Michael Hussey added 76 runs for the first wicket stand. Jadeja got the first breakthrough for Chennai as he bowled out Michael Hussey (39 off 33 balls). Star of the last match, Corey Anderson scored a quickfire 20 before falling to Ashwin. Mumbai were well placed at 99/2 in 12.1 overs and were looking at a huge total. Ravindra Jadeja got the priced wicket of Lendl Simmons and turned the fortunes of the match. Mumbai who were cruising at one stage suddenly lost the momentum and the wickets started to fall as pack of cards.Finally Mumbai were able to post 173/8 in 20 overs.

Chennai who were placed at number two spot for most of the league stage was displaced to number three spot by stunning Kolkata Knight Riders. CSK who have 9 wins out of 14 matches lost few matches in a row before bouncing back with a win against RCB in their last league match.

On the other hand, Mumbai who had a spectacular change of fortune, thanks to the superb batting and bowling combination will know that all their hard work will go wasted if they lose today. Mumbai who lost all their 5 matches in UAE leg were written off by many but the team revived its chances and qualified for the playoffs by beating Rajasthan Royals in a thriller.

Result – Mumbai Indians won by 5 wickets
Man of the match – Corey Anderson

In a stunning display of power batting, Corey Anderson scored 95 off 44 balls to not only make sure Mumbai wins but wins with style and qualifies for the playoffs. With this, Rajasthan Royals are now out of this season.

Chasing 190 to win, Mumbai lost Lendl Simmons in the second over but they never allowed the fall of wickets to slow their run rate. Mumbai knew it was do or die for them as they need to win the match and that too within 15 overs to beat Royals on net run rate and qualify for playoffs. Every Mumbai batsmen knew the importance of balls as they hit fours and sixes and took their chances. The star in the chase was Corey Anderson who scored unbeaten 95 off 44 balls which included 9 fours and 6 sixes. He was well supported by 10 ball 30 by Ambati Rayudu. Mumbai who lost 5 matches in a row in the UAE leg were written off by many but the defending champions came back and that too strongly to qualify for playoffs.

Earlier Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to field. Rajasthan Royals started cautiously with Shane Watson departing for just 8 but Sanju Samson was at his devastating best as he hammered Mumbai bowlers and scored 74 off 47 balls. He was ably supported by Karun Nair who scored 27 ball 50. Brad Hodge ( 29 off 16 balls) and James Faulkner (23 off 12 balls) helped Rajasthan Royals post a total of 189/4 in 20 overs.
