Chasing 165 to win, Kolkata Knight Riders got off to the worst start possible and lost J Kallis,G Gambhir and B McCullum in three consecutive deliveries when the team score was just 8. At 8/3 in 2.1 overs, KKR were in dire needs of a partnership. Manoj Tiwary and D Das were at the center and they took the score to 25 when D Das was bowled by Cooper. KKR were reeling at 25/4 in 5.4 overs and victory looked a distant dream. Manoj Tiwary and Y Pathan then played sensibly and took the team score past 50. Just when it looked that KKR are back on track for the run chase, Yousuf Pathan got out leaving KKR struggling at 66/5 in 10.2 overs. KKR needed 88 to win from last 8 overs and had 5 wickets in hand and Manoj Tiwary single handily tried to take his team towards victory as he scored a brilliant (59 off 49balls, 7×4 0x6) but his efforts went to vain as the required rate was way too high for KKR and they could manage 142/10 in 20 overs, thereby losing the match by 22 runs.
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field first. Rajasthan Royals got off to a poor start as the last match’s star A Rahane was run out for a duck leaving RR at 1/1 in 1.3 overs. R Dravid and S Goswami then took the team score to 44 when again run out lead to wicket of Dravid who departed after scoring 26 off 24 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. Having lost both openers and that too via run out, RR looked in some trouble and needed a partnership going. But soon S Goswami was also bowled leaving RR at 61/3 in 8.4 overs. A Menaria and B Hodge then steadied the innings and the duo took RR score past 100 in the 14th over. They both lashed on every bowler and scored runs freely. B Hodge was particularly severe on bowlers as he scored 44 runs in 29 balls which included 3 fours and 2 sixes. After he got out, O Shah came to the center and started hitting the ball in all directions. It was some fine hitting of Hodge, Shah and Menaria which helped Rajasthan Royals post a total of 164/5 in 20 overs.
