Lalit Modi’s management skills were again shown when at the very last moment he has waived the restrictions imposed on the media. This decision came after the News Broadcasters Association (NBA) threatened to totally boycott the Indian Premier League commonly known as DLF – IPL.
Lalit Modi, chairman and commissioner, Indian Premier League, said, “All publications and wires giving substantial coverage to the tournament can use reasonable quantity of photographs. There will no restriction on the number.”
Speaking to FE, Kunal Dasgupta, CEO, Sony Entertainment Television said, “We have decided to give free footage of upto three minutes absolutely free. Beyond that, we have set different tariff rates depending on the amount of footage each broadcaster will require. However, no clip should be more than 30-seconds. Moreover, the free footages will be given only for news programmes. If it is an analysis on the tournament or some other programme besides news, then we might charge for the footages.”

Last Minute Decision Saves IPL
Hrithik Roshan For Mumbai Indians
Now it was the turn of Mumbai Indians to sign up with a Bollywood star as their brand ambassador and thus they choosed Hrithik Roshan to support them in the Indian Premier League starting on April 18.
“Hrithik symbolises the spirit of the team,” said R Balachandran, director of the newly formed Indiawin Sports — a subsidiary of Reliance Industries which owns the franchise outfit, at a media conference to outline the team’s marketing campaign on Monday.
‘Duniya Hila Denge Hum (Let’s rock the world)’. is the themes song in which junior Roshan ca be seen dancing to the tunes and encouraging the IPL Mumbai team.
Television Channels To Boycott IPL
In a serious blow to the advertising of IPL, all the major television channels have decided to boycott the coverage of Indian Premier League DLF- IPL owing to the row between the governing body and organization of News Broadcasters Association.
Sony Network was given the exclusive rights and this was what the television channels were protesting.Lalit Modi even refused to take this issue and therefore the association has decied to completely boycott the mega cricket event.
“At the end of this day, therefore, our members are left with a partial and unsatisfactory response to our attempts to ensure a balanced approach between their rights to fair use and the rights and interests of IPL, and establish a relationship based on mutuality of interests and equity in law,” the letter read.
The News Broadcasters Association’s decision came after the IPL announced that it has reached an agreement with the Indian Newspaper Society on the conditions for media accreditation. It also made public the revised guidelines which drop several of its controversial conditions like the newspapers and agencies having to upload all the photographs taken by them on the IPL website within 24 hours of the match, failing which the accreditation of the media house would be cancelled.
The other stiff conditions included intellectual property rights for media coverage and the number of photos that can be used by the newspapers and news agencies on their website. However, the IPL did not relent on the condition that news agencies cannot give their IPL match photographs to cricket-dedicated websites.
Asked about the ongoing controversy, BCCI president Sharad Pawar [Images] said, “I have told Modi that I don’t want to hear any complaint from either the print and electronic media and he has promised (to take care of the issue).”
