In the most eagerly awaited match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first. Mumbai got off to the worst possible start as they lost master blaster for a duck in the very first over soon followed by captain Ricky Ponting. Dinesh Karthik showed some home but wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Thanks to some good hitting by K Pollard (57runs off 38 balls 4×4, 5×6) and 21 ball 21 from Harbhajan Singh that Mumbai could post a total of 148/6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 149 to win, CSK lost Murali Vijay in the second over soon followed by Suresh Raina. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals and despite getting starts, none of the top 5 batsmen could go past the score of 20. Chennai were reduced t0 66/5 in 12.1 overs still needing 83 to win. MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja then played some good shots and just when the duo was starting to look dangerous, Ravindra Jadeja was bowled by Patel. All hopes for a win were on the shoulders of captain cool, Dhoni and he did played a superb cameo of 51 off 26 balls (5×4, 3×6). CSK needed 12 off last over but the wicket of Dhoni on the very first ball of the 20th over dashed their hopes and finally Mumbai were able to win the match by 9 runs.
