IPL Preview – Royal Challengers Bangalore – Domestic Weaknesses Weigh Down Overseas Progress

After a disastrous campaign last year, when Bangalore resembled a Test outfit and played and strategised in a similarly dreary manner, owner Vijay Mallya made a string of changes, recruiting the South African-born England batsman Kevin Pietersen for a record fee and installing him as captain in place of the conservative Rahul Dravid.
With the sudden relocation of this year’s Indian Premier League to South Africa, the Royal Challengers Bangalore stand to be one of the main beneficiaries with their bevy of Proteas and the South African-trained Pietersen. Not only will they be aided by their experience in the local conditions, the South Africans will also have a greater liking for the grounds. Both Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn will enjoy the increased life in the surfaces, and the Proteas will be available for the entire series. Unfortunately for Mallya, Pietersen will only be available for the earlier part of the tournament before international duties intervene.

The South African coach Ray Jennings has used his local knowledge to engineer a coup by snapping up Roelof van der Merwe. A left arm orthodox spin bowling all rounder, van der Merwe recently made his international debut against Australia. He slotted into the lower middle order, and his heavy hitting and tight bowling palpably strengthened the Proteas, while his versatility greatly expanded his team’s strategic choices. In 44 List A matches, he averages 29.96 at a strike rate of 99.75 and has taken 75 wickets at 19.78 (ER 4.40). In 13 T20 matches, he averages 26.20 (SR 138.62) with the bat and 18.50 (ER 7.50, SR 14.7). It is quite a wonder that he was overlooked by Mickey Arthur and the South African selectors until a few weeks ago, and he will surely seize Cameron White’s position in the playing XI.

Zaheer Khan has been traded to Mumbai in return for batsman Robin Uthappa, but the loss in covered in part by the availability of the world’s No. 1 ranked ODI bowler Nathan Bracken for the second half of the season, after being absent for the entirety of last season. Ross Taylor returns for a full season, accompanied by Kiwi teammate and new signing Jesse Ryder, but with the cap on foreign players and the relative conservatism of most teams, both may spend a lot of their time watching from the sidelines, at least until the departure of Pietersen.
However, a large problem remains. Under the rules of the IPL, each team can only field four foreign players and the remaining seven must be Indians. Currently, Bangalore’s domestic cohort comprises 12 players: Wasim Jaffer, Rahul Dravid, Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Shreevats Goswami, Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Balachandra Akhil, Pankaj Singh, Anil Kumble, Tinu Yohannan and R Vinay Kumar. While the leading teams usually have five or six players who have recently been in contention for Indian selection, Bangalore has only Kohli, Praveen and Uthappa, none of whom are established or regular internationals.

The remainder are of questionable or little value. Dravid will miss the upcoming season, ostensibly due to family reasons, while question marks remain over the other veterans. Despite his continued productivity on the domestic circuit, Jaffer has always struggled in the shorter formats and was continually tormented on the bouncier and livelier pitches of South Africa, England and Australia during his 2007 stint in the Test team. With Dravid on the outer, Jaffer’s chances of seeing action have risen and do not bode well for Bangalore. At the other end of batting order, Kumble has been out of action since a hand injury ended his Test career at the Feroz Shah Kotla. Grand warrior that he was, Kumble’s age was becoming apparent in 2008 and at times even the most persistent of players appeared to be depleted. Kumble was never an athlete and he may have even more difficulty coming to terms with the frenetic pace of the game than he did last year. He won’t be alone in that respect, as Bangalore boast one the oldest and the least agile Indian units in the competition. Uthappa and Kohli aside, the fielding is average and uninspiring, clearly the worst of the eight teams.

Bangalore can take heart from the promising form of Kohli in the last 12 months. Feted and touted as a future international start after leading India to the U-19 World Cup crown, Kohli struggled in last year’s IPL, scoring only 165 runs at 15.00. The selectors decided to fast track him into the ODI team in spite of this, and he rewarded them when he was given the opportunity to do so. Since then, he has scored a century against the Australians in Hyderabad and then topped the run scoring in the limited overs matches in the past Indian season, plundering four centuries to end with 682 runs at 75.77. Given his paltry returns last year, Kohli can only go up this time around. Also looking to press his claims for an international recall is Uthappa. After a bright start to his ODI career, Uthappa’s weaknesses were identified by opposition bowlers, and he became increasingly dependent on reverse sweeps and paddle scoops for his runs. Playing in South Africa will be a challenge to his technique, but it will be one that he has to overcome if he wants a recall to the T20 squad to defend the World Cup that he helped to win two years ago. Bangalore had the lowest run rate last season, and Uthappa and Kohli will need to fire if they are to have any chance of making the finals.

No One Calls Royal Challengers A Test Team Anymore

The induction of England batsman Kevin Pietersen and New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder, besides Bangalore lad Robin Uthappa, has helped Indian Premier League franchise Bangalore Royal Challengers shed its tag of ‘Test outfit’ in Twenty20 cricket, says team owner Vijay Mallya.”Last year our team was called a Test team, but with players such as (Kevin) Pietersen, (Robin) Uthappa and (Jesse) Ryder in the squad now, no one calls it a Test team anymore,” Mallya said in Mumbai on Thursday.Mallya’s team was criticised by experts last year for lacking the firepower required for Twenty20 cricket, as it ended up seventh in the eight-team contest.

Pietersen will lead the team till he returns for England duty, after which star South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis will take over the mantle.

The liquor baron said his team has five home-grown players and their familiarity with conditions in South Africa, where the second edition of IPL is to be held from April 18, will stand his team in good stead.

“We have five South African players in our team, apart from former South Africa coach Ray Jennings. They are well aware of the conditions in that country and this advantage should work in our favour,” he said. The quintet of South African players — Dale Steyn, Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Roelof Van der Merwe and Dillion du Preez are among the RCB’s ten foreign recruits. While admitting that shifting of the IPL to South Africa would cause some financial losses to the franchise, Mallya said he is confident that Board of Control for Cricket in India would make up for it.

“The event is sure to cost us but I am sure that the BCCI will do something about it. Holding the tournament in such a short time was a challenge in itself, the hisaab-kitaab [accounting] can be done once the tournament is over,” he said.

Mallya expressed hope that viewership of the tournament would not be affected because of the shift in venue.

“About 95 per cent viewership of the IPL is TV audience. It is unlikely to suffer as the BCCI has adjusted the timings of the matches as per the convenience of Indian audience.

“IPL going overseas is a lot better than missing it altogether,” he said.

On Force India’s performance in the Australian Grand Prix, Mallya, who is also co-owner of the Formula One team, said he was happy with performance of the drivers.”I’m happy with the ninth and 11th place finishes that Adrian Sutil and Giancarlo Fisichella achieved. Both of them completed their races in the first event of the season which was a big satisfaction in itself.”

Opinion – Ryder Faces Big 0ff – Field Test In IPL

Even before the man of the match was announced at the end of the second test match in Napier on Monday Jesse Ryder had staked his claim with an uprooted stump.

Yes, Gautam Gambhir’s solid performance to save India’s blushes deserved the title of the “Second Wall of India’ in the footsteps of “The Wall’, veteran Rahul Dravid.

But, indubitably, Ryder is the man TV cameras will follow, not only in New Zealand but around the world.

As Napier Technical Old Boys stalwart and former club and Bay representative teammate Craig Finlay points out, the world now knows of the talented batsman who could go on to rewrite many record books in the age-old game of willow on leather.

For those who were fortunate enough to have watched him in the Bay since he was a teenager, it’s the worst-kept secret.

His prowess is not just confined to bludgeoning balls over the boundary rope or switching to effortless stroke making. He is equally adept in other facets of the game.

The baby-faced allrounder is just as lethal on the field. A safe pair of hands and an educated line and length with variable speed in bowling make him even more marketable.

That is why so many Indians can’t wait to see the former Napier Boys High School pupil ply his trade in India.

Those who quibble about issues such as why he gave his bat a bashing after he was dismissed last Saturday following his double century have to juxtapose that with a player coming to grips with a world outside his comfort zone.

However, the astute media wallahs in the press booth at McLean Park are equally cautious, not surprisingly, about his off-field antics which have in the past year quite often detracted from his on-field ones. His trials and tribulations have been of major concern to New Zealand Cricket who have done a commendable job in keeping him off the booze wagon.

Central to Ryder not reaching out for another cost-free shot glass from money- grabbing watering-hole moguls around the country is the support he’s been receiving from friends who opt simply to drink coffee and tea when he pays them a visit.

It was only a matter of time that the lucrative IPL Twenty20 competition was going to snap up the 24-year-old middle-order batsman.

The imposing question is who will be Ryder’s big brother in time of need abroad?

The Indian media informed me the owner of Ryder’s Royal Challengers Bangalore team is none other than Vijay Mallya, the No 1 liquor manufacturer in the subcontinent.

“They have some huge parties after matches, win or lose. The celebrations then carry on board his luxury yacht so it’ll be a real test for Ryder,’ a journalist said.

A female scribe added Ryder would also have to deal with the distraction of the fairer sex in Bangalore, which boasts many famous long-legged beauties including the No 1 Bollywood actress, Katrina Kaif, masquerading as the team’s brand ambassador.

“When he comes back from there you guys here will be writing different types of stories about him,’ she said with a grin.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. Ryder has shown discipline, albeit on the foundation of some sobering counselling and support.

He won’t be short of advisers. His former Wairarapa Bush age-group teammate, Ross Taylor, will be there. So will the likes of senior Bangalore players such as Rahul Dravid and Englishman Kevin Pietersen.

Perhaps the biggest saving grace for Ryder is that the IPL has been reluctantly moved to South Africa this month because of terrorism threats during the height of general elections in India.

That is not to say South Africa is any more safer than any other part of the world. Nevertheless, it could be an ideal location to acclimatise to an intriguing habitat.

Regrettably for Ryder, his life-long test, rightly or wrongly, will be to show he didn’t win the world only to lose his soul.

Warding off social undesirables, while rewriting cricket history, will become his main preoccupation, whether he likes it or not.

But only he can change that and, more importantly, he will always have that choice.

He can start by taking a leaf out of the book of milk-guzzling Indian Virender Sehwag.

KP Defends IPL Intentions

Kevin Pietersen has defended his decision to play in the Indian Premier League only a few days after complaining of homesickness during England’s lengthy tour of the Caribbean.

The Hampshire batsman faces only a week at home when he returns from England duty next weekend before flying out to South Africa for a lucrative two-week stint with the Bangalore Royal Challengers.

Such a schedule has prompted fierce criticism given his request to return home for 48 hours during the Test series having been apart from wife Jessica Taylor. But Pietersen said: “What happens in two weeks is a totally different kettle of fish and that’s the difference.”

As England prepare for Friday’s one-day series decider against West Indies at the Beausejour Stadium, Pietersen believes he will be helping England by developing his game with his participation in the IPL.

He added: “Everybody on the tour wants to go home, everybody wants to see their families but what wasn’t written was how dedicated I am to playing for England and how much winning this game on Friday means to me and the team.

“I’m going to spend a week at home with my wife and then go back to business.

“I don’t think people realise it wasn’t a case of just wanting to go home, to leave the tour and be ungrateful that I’m an England player or for being in Barbados. Everyone thought I just wanted to pack my bags and leave, but that’s not the case.”

Pietersen was signed up for a staggering US Dollars 1.5million by Bangalore, which he will earn on a pro-rata basis depending on the number of games he plays, but he has to return to England by May 1 before the first Test at Lord’s against West Indies six days later.

He insisted that financial gain was not his motivation, claiming: “It’s not a case of playing cricket for money. Yes, there is money attached to it but I’m going to learn, play with the best players in the world and it’s an opportunity to improve my game.

“I’ve always said that I’m willing to learn and I will learn in the IPL, playing with some of the best players in the world. I want to be the best person I can possibly be and the best player I can possibly be, which helps England and that’s what all the players want to do.”
