In a high scoring thriller today, the 2012 champions Kolkata Knight Riders beat Kings XI Punjab by three wickets to win the IPL 2014 season, thanks to the superb batting performance by Manish Pandey and valuable support from other players.

Chasing 200 to win, Kolkata lost their highest run scorer Robin Uthappa in the very first over when the team score was just 6. Captain Gambhir and Manish Pandey revived Kolkata’s innings and scored at the required 10 runs per over to continue KKR’s hunt for the title. In the 7th over, Karanveer got the priced wicket of Gambhir to give some hope to Punjab but the next batsmen in, Yusuf Pathan continued where Gambhir left. He along with Pandey took the match away from Punjab. Pandey played a stunning innings of 94 in 50 balls where as Pathan scored 36 off 22 balls. Just when it looked that Kolkata will win the match easily, Karanveer striked and got quick wickets to reduce KKR to 176/6 in 17 overs. Needing 11 to win from 2 overs, Piyush Chawla hit a six on the last ball of 19th over to bring the match in KKR’s hand. They needed 5 to win off the last over and Chawla hit a four to take his team to a 3 wicket win over Punjab.

Earlier Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to field first. Kings XI Punjab openers added 23 runs for the first wicket stand after which Sehwag got out. Captain Bailey also fell cheaply and Punjab were struggling at 30/2 in 5.1 overs. At the end of power play, Kings XI Punjab were at 32/2 which was their lowest powerplay total in this IPL. Manan Vohra and Wriddhiman Saha then slowly started to build Punjab’s innings. Punjab were 92/2 in 13 overs and after this, both Saha and Vohra pressed the accelerator. Saha and VOhra started to hammer every bowler and was particularly severe to Naraine. The duo added 67 runs in next 4 overs. Vohra got out after scoring a brilliant 52 ball 67 where as Saha continued the blast and scored 115 in 55 balls (10 fours, 8 sixes) to help Kings XI Punjab post 199/4 in 20 overs.
