Man of the match – Glenn Maxwell
In a stunning display of batting, KXIP posted a huge total of 231/4 in 20 overs and then restricted CSK to 187/6 to win the match by 44 runs.
Chasing 231 was never going to be easy and needed a flying start but Chennai lost Dwayne Smith in the very first over. Though Raina and Brendon McCulllum put up a brave face and took the score past 50 in the 8th over but the asking rate kept mounting high and increased the pressure on CSK batting line up. Every CSK batsmen got a start but none could match the Maxwell performance to take the team to victory. Faf du Plessis played a brilliant 25 ball 52 runs inning but it was too little to late for CSK and eventually they could manage to score 187/6 in 20 overs in this high scoring game.
Earlier, Kings XI Punjab who were invited to bat first by CSK got off to a fast start as the openers Virender Sehwag and Mandeep Singh added 33 runs in 4.5 overs before Mandeep got out. Soon Sehwag too got out leaving KXIP at 38/2 in 5.2 overs. But this wicket changed the whole complexion of the game as it brought Glenn Maxwell and David Miller on the crease. The duo hammered every CSK bowler out of the park. Maxwell scored a brilliant 90 off just 38 balls(6×4, 8×6) where as Miller scored 32 ball 47 which included 5 fours and 2 sixes. Captain George Bailey also played a superb cameo of 40 in 13 balls(6×4, 2×6) to help KXIP post a huge total of 231/4 in 20 overs.
