Today in the 63rd match of IPL 2013, Kings XI Punjab won the toss and elected to field first. Cheteshwar Pujara and Chris Gayle opened the innings and added 22 runs before Pujara got out which brought captain Kohli on the crease. Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli played superbly and smashed Kings XI Punjab bowlers to all corners of the ground. The duo added 136 runs in 14.2 overs. Gayle scored 53 ball 77 before getting bowled by Awana where as Kohli scored 43 ball 57 and helped RCB post a decent total of 174/5 in 20 overs.
Kings XI Punjab who had just 10 points from 13 games before the start of this game had a very miniscule chance of qualifying for the playoffs and thus they were playing without much pressure. Chasing 175 needed a special innings from one of the top order batsmen and captain Adam Gilchrist raised to the occasion. Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh opened the innings but Marsh failed as he was bowled by Khan for just 8 which brough Azhar Mahmood on the crease. Gilchrist and Mahmood scored 118 runs in 77 balls and took the score to 142 before Mahmood got out after scoring 41 ball 61. Man in form David Miller was bowled by Muralitharan for just 2 but captain Gilchrist remained firm on other end. He remained unbeaten on 85 off 54 balls which included 10 fours and 3 sixes to take his team to a superb 7 wicket win over RCB.
With this loss, RCB’s chances of qualifying for playoffs have reduced as they are tied with Sunrisers who still have one more match in hand.
