Today in the 17th match of DLF IPL 2012, Kolkata Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bowl first at the hot and sweaty condition of Eden Gardens. Kolkata replaced injured Balaji by Jayadev Unadkat and Punjab dropped out of form Paul Valthaty and Parvinder Awana to include Paras Dogra and Bhargav Bhatt. Kolkata got the big wicket of Gilchrist when the team score was just 17. Soon the star batsmen Shaun Marsh also got out. Both the big names of Kings XI Punjab were back in pavilion when the team score was just 21. Narine taking both the wickets gave the best bowling start possible to KKR. Punjab needed a solid partnership to stabilize the innings, Mandeep Singh and D Hussey both played sensibly to take the team score past 50 and just when it looked that the duo is set for a big score, Hasan got the wicket of Mandeep and soon Hussey also got run out due to a terrible mix up. KXIP were struggling at 85/4 in 14.1 overs and needed some good hitting to get a reasonable total. But wickets kept falling regularly and Kolkata Knight Riders bowlers never allowed easy runs to Kings XI Punjab batsmen. Finally Kings XI Punjab managed to score 19 runs in the 19th over and post a total of 134/9 runs in 20 overs. S Narine was the star for Kolkata Knight Riders as he got 5 wickets for just 19 runs in his 4 overs.
Chasing 135 to win, KKR lost Kallis when the team score was just 13. Captain Gambhir was also out cheaply leaving KKR struggling at 30/2 in 3.4 overs. Manoj Tiwary and M Bisla then played sensibly and took the team to 74 before Tiwary got out. KKR were comfortably placed at 74/3 in 11.2 overs before Kings XI Punjab bowler P Chawla turned the match. He got three quick wickets leaving KKR struggling at 88/6 in 14.4 overs. Needing 36 to win from last 4 overs, the match was going for an exciting finish but superb hitting by D Das ( 35 runs off 23 balls) took the match to the last over finish. Finally it was Punjab who holded on to the nerves and won the match by 2 runs in a thrilling finish.
