Today in the 16th match of DLF IPL 2012, Chennai Super Kings won the toss and elected to bat first. F du Plessis and M Vijay opened the inning for CSK and the duo scored 43 runs for the first wicket partnership. M Vijay scored just 8 runs out of it and got out but it was F du Plessis who did the bulk scoring. He then along with Raina took the team score past 50 but got out after scoring 42 off 33 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. CSK were comfortably placed at 67/2 in 9.1 overs. Raina and captain Dhoni then played cautiously and took the team score to 86 when Raina got out. R Jadeja was the next to come in and he justified his big auction money. The star batsmen for CSK hammered Pune bowler and provided the much needed momentum to the scoring rate. It was his brilliant knock of 44 off 26 balls(4×4,2×6) which helped CSK post a total of 155/5 in 20 overs.

Pune needed 156 to create yet another upset in the league and they got off to a flying start R Uthappa and J Ryder adding 31 in just 3 overs for the first wicket partnership. Even after R Uthappa was run out by Bravo, J Ryder and S Ganguly maintained a healthy run rate and took the team score past 50 in the 6th over. Pune needed 100 to win from 14 overs and it looked like the duo is completely set to take their team to an emphatic win but a superb run out by Jadeja got the wicket of Ganguly and the run chase lost some momentum. With J Ryder and M Samuels on crease, the match was poised for a superb finish as Pune needed 71 to win from last 8 overs. The wicket of M Samuels brought S Smith on crease and he along with J Ryder took the team score past 100. J Ryder completed his well deserved 50 and scored runs with ease. He along with Smith smashed CSK bowlers to all corners of the ground and it was the brilliant innings of 73 in 56 balls by Ryder and 44 off 22 balls by Smith which took Pune Warriors to a superb 7 wicket victory.
