In a surprise move, the BCCI president Anurag Thakur said that from this year onwards, a shortened version of the IPL named “mini IPL” or “IPL overseas”will be played. The final format and dates are yet to be announced and Thakur said it will be done by taking all stakeholders in confidence.
“In the month of September, the BCCI is willing to host a mini IPL or IPL overseas, a shorter format, not home and away matches but a lesser number of matches; in a two-week window we will be able to complete it.” said Thakur
The concept is said to evolve because of the off season in September as no major cricket event is held in September every year. Champions Trophy which was earlier thought of a good substitute has failed miserably both for viewers as well as broadcasters so the board is willing to start something which would please both.
