New Zealand fast bowler Chris Martin is hoping to attract the eye of the Indian Premier League teams with a successful series in England.

The 33-year-old is the most experienced of the Black Caps not to be involved in the inaugural competition, with Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Jacob Oram all involved before heading to England.

And having seen his team-mates get involved in the competition, Martin is keen to play a part as the IPL continues to grow.

Martin said: “It inspires me to get myself over there.

“As far as a New Zealand player goes it is an important financial incentive to get yourself into India.

“For a young guy coming up, playing cricket in New Zealand it is a passage you should be following.

“It’s a superannuation plan: if you can get your name up in lights and somebody with a wad of rupees is willing to spend money on you to play cricket in their country it is not something to turn down.

“It is a supplement to your career and means you focus even more time and energy on playing for your country.”

Martin, though, will need to work on his batting if he is to play some part in the IPL with an average of 2.55 from 40 Tests unlikely to have many side’s paying out big money for his services.

However Martin insists a bombardment of bouncers from England Lions bowler Chris Tremlett at the Rose Bowl has worked in his favour.

“That has woken me up to the fact that it’s important to get bat in front of the ball instead of the body,” said Martin.

“For me double figures has always been pretty good.

“Relaying the message from what I see to my hands and my feet has always been a bit of a problem.

“There is a slight mental block as well with my batting – when I was younger I know I wasn’t as handicapped as I am now.

“I also understand that playing at this level that there is not a lot of room to move if you have limited ability.

Kolkata: Shah Rukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders were on Wednesday taken to court by Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS) on alleged copyright infringement for playing songs of Hindi films at the Eden Gardens during Indian Premier League matches.

Justice Sanjib Banerjee of the Calcutta High Court, however, refused to grant an injunction on the use of the songs and directed the parties in the case to file affidavits stating their position.

IPRS alleged that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) used 14 popular Hindi film songs like Om Shanti Om’s Dard-e-Disco and Mauja hi Mauja from the film Jab We Met without its permission during the IPL matches at the Eden Gardens.

Appearing for Kolkata Knight Riders, counsels Anindya Mitra and Debanjan Mondal submitted that they already had permission to play nine of the 14 songs at the stadium from Super Cassettes, which they said had the copyright.

Justice Banerjee directed Kolkata Knight Riders and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), which has also been made a party in the case, to file affidavits in opposition within two weeks after the summer vacation and IPRS its reply in another week.

Mumbai, May 14 (PTI) Temperamental off-spinner Harbhajan Singh today got away with a five-match ODI ban for slapping his India teammate S Sreesanth but was warned by the Cricket Board of a life ban for any further misconduct on his part.
A day after BCCI-appointed Commissioner Sudhir Nanavati submitted a 14-page report to the Board, the BCCI’s Disciplinary Committee acted swiftly to impose the ban on the beleaguered spinner who will now miss the forthcoming tri-series in Bangladesh and two matches of the Asia Cup in Pakistan.

The 27-year-old Harbhajan, who had already been banned from the ongoing Indian Premier League and fined a whopping Rs three crore match fee for the level 4 offence, was summoned by the Disciplinary Committee, headed by president Sharad Pawar, to hear his views on the incident which happened after an IPL match in Mohali on April 25.

“The Committee accordingly decided to ban Harbhajan Singh for five one-day internationals, starting today and further observed that any further instance of misconduct will invoke a life-ban,” the BCCI said in a statement after the committee’s hearing.

“The Committee invoked Rule 3.2.1 of the BCCI Regulations for Players, Team officials, Managers, Umpires and Administrators. Under this provision, the maximum punishment that can be meted out to a player is a ban up to a maximum of 5 ODIs and/or 3 Test matches,” Pawar told reporters.

He said a copy of the report was given to Harbhajan who was heard by the committee before taking a final decision on the quantum of punishment.
